Vol. 76 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Mechanics' Working Conditions.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he has received representations from the Irish Motor Mechanics' Trade Union that certain conditions of employment require to be inquired into and adjusted; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter.

Certain representations were made to me by the trade union mentioned in the question, and a reply was issued intimating that I had no statutory powers to give effect to these representations. The questions at issue are matters for settlement between employers and workers, and an attempt made by my Department to arrange for a conference between employers in the motor trade and this union was unsuccessful.

Can the Minister state whether under the Conditions of Employment Act or any other Act he has any powers with regard to the fixing of wages or whether under any interpretation of the law as it stands he has the power of fixing the wages for skilled workers?

I have no powers under the Conditions of Employment Act to fix rates of wages for skilled workers.
