Vol. 77 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Poultry Production

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will take steps at once to induce county committees of agriculture to adopt the day-old chick distribution scheme and the provision of Putnam lamps for chicken rearers so that increased numbers of I hens may be available for egg production next year.

It is usual at this season to communicate with the county committees of agriculture in regard to measures designed to increase the stocks of improved strains of poultry during the ensuing year. Steps had already been taken to urge the advisability of extending the facilities for the distribution of day-old chicks and in communications now about to be sent out to the county committees special reference will be made to this particular measure.

What about the Putnam lamps?

There are schemes governing them.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether fowl station holders will be required to produce sex-linked day-old chicks so that supplies of day-old chicks may be guaranteed to include a preponderance of pullet chicks.

Owing to difficulties of a practical nature it is not proposed to require station holders to produce sex-linked day-old chicks.

If they do not, we will get nothing but cockerels.
