Vol. 77 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Pier at Valentia.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state the present position regarding the scheme or the extension of the pier at Valentia Harbour, County Kerry; and whether in view of the severe hardship imposed on fishermen and people coming to the mainland from Valentia Island by the inadequacy and unsuitability of the present landing facilities, he will take steps to expedite a decision in the matter.

It is presumed that the Deputy refers to the slipway at Renard Point in Valentia Harbour. Representations have been received as to the need for improvement of the present facilities at Renard Point in order that landings might be made with safety in all weathers. A recent engineering survey indicates, however, that such proposals would involve an expenditure of the order of £l3,000-£l4,000, an amount beyond the scope of any funds at present available for work of the kind desired.
