Vol. 82 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Banking Commission Reports.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the Government have considered the reports of the Banking Commission, and, if so, whether he is in a position to indicate the Government's policy in relation to the several reports.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question by Deputy Davin on the 2nd October last. I regret that I am unable to add anything to my statement on that occasion.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would he tell the House whether he proposes at an early date to indicate the Government's attitude to the several reports submitted to him by this Banking Commission which exhaustively reviewed the whole financial position of the State over a period of some years?

As I have said here before, several aspects of the recommendations made by the Banking Commission have been under consideration by the Government, but in view of the upset in normal business during the period of the emergency no conclusions have been arrived at with regard to quite a number of the matters which have been under consideration. On some of them there have been conclusions arrived at, and it is hoped that at some date in the future—I will not say an early date—legislation may be introduced in connection with them.
