Vol. 82 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Balrothery Dispensary.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that the Balrothery Board of Guardians have on several recent occasions made a nomination to the vacancy for caretaker in the Balrothery Dispensary, and if he will state why he insists on declining to allow the appointment to be made.

It is assumed that the Deputy refers to the appointment of a caretaker for the Balbriggan Dispensary and in that event the reply to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. When the post of caretaker in Balbriggan Dispensary became vacant application was received from the Balbriggan Nursing Association requesting that the living rooms in the dispensary be given to the Jubilee nurse. This application was supported by the recommendation of the dispensary medical officer. The Jubilee nurse does general nursing, tuberculosis work and public health work. The rooms which she occupies at present are small with no water supply, and no sanitary accommodation. She is unable to attend her patients in those rooms and the medical officer gave her permission to examine and dress her patients in the living apartments in the dispensary, where she sees patients from 9 to 10 o'clock every morning and at any other time during the day that her services are required. If anyone else is appointed as caretaker and occupies those apartments the Jubilee nurse will be unable to attend her patients there. It is for these reasons that it was suggested to the board that the vacancy for a caretaker be filled by the Jubilee nurse, and I see no reason why the board of assistance should not comply with that suggestion.
