Vol. 82 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - O'Beirne Estate (Westmeath).

asked the Minister for Lands if any turf banks were let by the Land Commission on the O'Beirne estate, County Westmeath, in the year 1940, and, if so, how many, and the charge per perch.

Turf banks totalling about 120 perches were let to 67 persons on the bog on the O'Beirne estate for the 1940 season, at rents ranging from 15/- per perch to 1/3 per perch, varying with the quality of the turbary.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the road into the bog on the O'Beirne estate, County Westmeath, is incomplete; if he will state whether any representations have been made to his Department to have it completed, and if, in view of the need of turf, he will have it completed before the autumn.

The only representations regarding the bog road into the bog on the O'Beirne estate which have been received by the Land Commission, are those which have been made by the Deputy. Up to the present the Land Commission has not been in a position to undertake the full scheme for the division and development of this bog, but road works have already been completed on the estate which give the persons cutting turf on the bog ample means of access to their turf banks and provide accommodation for further turf cutting at present. As is customary, the opening of face banks is a matter for applicants themselves.
