asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed to complete the telephonic connections between the islands of Cape Clear and Sherkin, County Cork, and the mainland, and whether portion of this work was begun in Cape Clear and abandoned, and, in view of the urgency of the scheme, if he will state the reason for a cessation of the work.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephones for County Cork Islands.
The installation of a wireless service between Cape Clear and Sherkin and the mainland is held up by difficulties in obtaining delivery of certain items of equipment. This is due to emergency conditions. The work will be completed with the least possible delay when the outstanding apparatus comes to hand.
Preliminary work which it was possible to carry out without the equipment referred to was in progress when the severe storm at the end of January did widespread damage to telegraph and telephone plant and necessitated the withdrawal of the men for urgent repair work.
