Vol. 83 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fuel Supply for Winter.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state what provision he proposes making regarding a fuel supply for next winter for towns such as Carlow situated in a non-turf area where the efforts of the local authority and parish council have failed to secure any hope of a supply from turf areas.

It is the present intention that available coal supplies will continue to be distributed through the normal channels with due regard to the availability of alternative fuels but it should be clearly understood that circumstances may arise which may prevent any coal being available for household purposes in any area. The matter of the distribution of alternative fuels, turf and firewood, either to supplement or substitute coal supplies, is having attention, but in view of the improbability of the supply of such fuels being equal to the demand for them, it is of the utmost importance that local effort to create and lay in fuel stocks should not be relaxed.
