Vol. 84 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supply of Grain Crop Seeds.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will now state what steps he proposes to take to ensure that stocks of Irish grown wheat, oats and barley suitable for seed are assembled, cleaned and made available to farmers for next season's crops at prices which, while leaving both the grower and assembler a reasonable profit, will prevent the possibility of profiteering; and if he will say what steps are being taken to secure any surplus small seeds, including roots, that are at present available outside the country, or what steps he proposes to take to ensure an adequate supply of these seeds for next season.

Since I replied to Deputy Davin's question of the 10th ultimo on this subject, some progress has been made particularly in regard to cereals about which I hope to make an announcement prior to harvest. The position in regard to root and vegetable seeds, almost all of which are ordinarily imported, is more difficult. Farmers have already been advised to grow their own requirements of turnip, mangel and cabbage seeds and steps are being taken, in consultation with the seed trade, with a view to securing supplies of small seeds for import.
