Vol. 85 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Flour Supplies.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state what action he is taking to ensure that a sufficiency of flour is made available for residents of Castletownbere Peninsula and other areas similarly situated in West Cork where the land is unsuitable for wheat production, and where the inhabitants have to depend entirely on flour supplies from outside sources to meet their requirements.

I am not aware that there is insufficient flour available for the residents of Castletownbere Peninsula or other areas in West Cork.

With the limited quantity of wheat available it is not possible to allow unrestricted deliveries of flour to any area.

If the Minister is not aware, would the Government send him out on a tour?

The question relates to Castletownbere.

The Deputy may be sure that before making a statement of that kind all inquiries are made.

Numbers of people have been without flour for a considerable time past.

That is not correct, and I think my information is more recent than the Deputy's.

I have been through the areas and so have other Deputies in this House and their information is as correct as the Minister's.

Neither the traders, the Guards nor anyone will agree with the Deputy.

There are places in Castletownbere where the Guards have had to be called in in order to help with the distribution of flour.

That was debated in the House here and exposed long ago.

The Guards have had to be called in every time the flour arrives, the quantity of flour is so small.

That is not true.

That is quite true.

Go and ask the Guards.
