Vol. 85 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shelling of Irish Vessel.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is aware that the damage caused to the Skibbereen owned vessel Loch Ryan last August was caused before any notification was received by our Government as to what were considered "war zone waters" by the belligerent power that shelled the vessel and whether he will make further strong representations to the German Government that under these circumstances full compensation should be paid for the damage inflicted on this peaceful vessel trading to Eire with supplies for our people and whose identity was clearly shown.

I am aware of the circumstances referred to in the question. Representations to the effect suggested by the Deputy have been made, and we are continuing to press them. So far, these efforts have not been successful, and, at the moment, I can hold out no hope of a satisfactory settlement.
