Vol. 85 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Establishment of Central Bank.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is the intention of the Government to introduce during the present session legislation dealing with (1) the setting up of a central bank as already indicated, and (2) the financial problems that will arise out of the inflation of the pound sterling as a war aftermath.

The question of setting up a central bank is under active consideration by the Government and legislation is at present being drafted on the subject. It is too early yet to say when such legislation will be introduced, but there will be no avoidable delay. As regards the second part of the question, financial problems of the nature referred to by the Deputy are kept under constant observation, but in view of the many uncertain factors in the post-war situation, I do not see any basis on which we could at present frame legislation. It is not to be assumed, as the Deputy apparently does assume, that inflationary forces are not at work here on a scale somewhat comparable to that in Great Britain.
