Vol. 87 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Breaches of Licensing Laws.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number, in Eire, of (a) retailers of beer, wine and spirits, on and off the premises, (b) proprietors of hotels and restaurants, and (c) clubs, against whom prosecutions were successfully brought during the year 1941 for breaches of the licensing laws, and the total amount collected in fines from groups (a), (b) and (c) respectively; and whether in any amending legislation which he may introduce the Minister will be prepared to extend to retailers of beer, wine and spirits on the premises the extra facilities in the matter of hours, etc., enjoyed by clubs.

The statistics available do not separate convictions under the Licensing Acts into the categories mentioned by the Deputy and the labour involved in compiling the information asked for would be so great that I am satisfied that it would not be justified.

I am not in a position at present to give any information in regard to the proposals which will be included in the forthcoming licensing Bill.
