Vol. 87 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Value of Clothes Coupons.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that the high coupon value of protective clothing such as dungarees, overalls and certain types of uniforms is likely to result in many workers doing without them to the detriment of the ordinary clothes, the conservation of the supply of which was the object of the Order, and if he will accordingly exclude this type of clothing from the rationing scheme or considerably reduce its coupon value.

The coupon value for men's dungarees has been reduced to three coupons for the period up to the 30th September, 1942. I consider that this reduced coupon value removes any immediate difficulty which workers might be likely to experience in respect of such garments. I have received representations in regard to the coupon values for overalls and uniform clothing, which representations are being carefully considered. Discussions have taken place with trade unions and it is the intention to have discussions with employers in certain cases regarding the general question of the supply of protective clothing and uniforms to certain classes of workers.
