Vol. 88 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workmen's Compensation Act.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the inadequacy of the benefits provided in non-fatal cases under the Workmen's Compensation Act, especially where there is total incapacity; and whether, in view of the fact that there has been a substantial increase in the insurance premiums covering the risks contracted under the Act, he will take steps at an early date to introduce proposals for increasing the benefits provided in such cases.

I am advised that there has been no recent general increase in premiums for insurance against risks under the Workmen's Compensation Act and, consequently, there can be no question of increasing benefits under the Act on the basis of increases in premiums. I have, however, had the question of increasing benefits in non-fatal cases under consideration, but I am not yet in a position to make an announcement in the matter.
