Vol. 88 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware of the hardship created by the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act for persons living near the Border, who may from time to time be employed in Northern Ireland and whose National Health Insurance contributions are not recognised for the purposes of the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act; and whether he will take steps to remove this anomaly from the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act.

The statutory conditions for a contributory widow's pension require a payment of 104 contributions at the rate proper to this country. If an insured person fails to make the required number of payments, contributions paid while employed outside the country under the insurance scheme in force in that country cannot be reckoned for the purpose of assessing a pension under the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act. I am not aware, however, that the position in this respect is of such a general nature as to call for any action at present.
