Vol. 88 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allowances to Soldiers.

asked the Minister for Defence whether fuel, light, bedding and household equipment are provided without any additional charge to non-commissioned officers and men resident in married quarters, but not to those who have to provide their own homes; and, if so, if he will see that an allowance towards the cost of these things will be made to married soldiers living outside barracks.

Married quarters are provided with furniture, fuel, light and water on scales laid down in Defence Force Regulations. The amounts deducted from the marriage allowance of soldiers provided with married quarters include charges for these services which are not, therefore, provided free. In the circumstances it is not possible to make an allowance to soldiers living outside barracks towards the cost of providing these amenities.
