Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mussel-Fishing in County Kerry.

Mr. Flynn

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that there are about 40 persons, representing 20 boats, engaged in the mussel-fishing industry, who are at present unable to avail of the services of the purification tank at Cromane, County Kerry, owing to the inadequate capacity of the tank; and, if so, if he will ask the Irish Sea Fisheries Association to arrange that, in order to include the boats from which mussels have not so far been accepted, a certain quota will be accepted from each boat each week, or alternatively, that the produce of each boat will be accepted in alternate weeks.

I am aware that some persons in the Cromane area desirous of availing themselves of the local purification and marketing station have been unable to do so, owing to the increased quantity of mussels now gathered being considerably in excess of the working capacity of the station. I will ask the directors of the Irish Sea Fisheries Association to consider the adoption of one or other of the alternatives mentioned by the Deputy, in so far as those concerned are members of the association.
