Vol. 89 No. 3

Committee on Finance. - Vote 21—Stationery and Printing.

I move:—

That a supplementary sum, not exceeding £35,700, be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1943, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Stationery Office; for Stationery, Printing, Paper, Binding, and Printed Books for the Public Service; and for sundry Miscellaneous Services, including Reports of Oireachtas Debates.

The original provision for sub-head I— Paper—was £58,000. The supplementary provision now required arises from the purchase, at a cost of approximately £35,000, of 600 tons of Canadian newsprint which was required as a reserve for the printing of future ration books and other departmental emergency requirements for which this paper is suitable. Additional necessary purchases from home sources and increases in the purchase price of paper, amounting to about £12,000, bring the excess on the sub-head up to £47,000.

This expenditure is offset by savings on other sub-heads amounting to £8,300, due mainly to considerable economies effected in general departmental requirements. Increased receipts from Appropriations-in-Aid will, it is anticipated, be available as a further offset to the additional expenditure on paper. The additional receipts anticipated include an estimated sum of £2,580 in respect of sales of waste paper.

Vote put and agreed to.
