Vol. 91 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tenancy of Labourers' Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that county managers have dispossessed tenants of labourers' cottages whose rents and rates were fully paid up, without grounds stated; if any such cases have come before his Department for sanction within the last 12 months; and, if so, if he will state the grounds on which sanction was given in these cases.

No cases of the kind referred to by the Deputy have come to the knowledge of my Department. Tenants of labourers' cottages can only be dispossessed as a result of legal proceedings. Such proceedings may be initiated by means of a Notice to Quit. It is not necessary to give any reason for issuing such a notice, but in actual practice a Notice to Quit is not issued without adequate cause such as arrears of rent, keeping of premises in insanitary condition, or other breaches of the tenancy agreement.
