Vol. 91 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hours of County Council Employees.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that certain persons employed by the County Councils of Laoighis and Offaly are obliged to work excessive hours without extra pay; that one person is rostered for 105 hours per week and is expected to be "on call" duty afterwards; and whether he will take immediate steps to ensure that all employees of county institutions are given the benefit of the hours and other privileges contained in the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936.

As regards the first two parts of the question the reply is in the negative. As regards the final part of the question, the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936, regulates the conditions of employment of industrial workers and is mandatory on local authorities in so far as their employees come within its terms. I have no power to authorise an extension of the provisions of the Act to workers other than industrial workers.
