Vol. 91 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flax Production in Eire.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the. total quantity of flax fibre produced in Eire during the 1942-43 season, the total amount of the bonus given by the British Government to the Government of Eire for distribution to flax growers in Eire in respect of that crop and the value of this bonus per stone to Eire flax growers; also the total amount of the bonus paid to Eire flax growers by the Government of Eire in respect of the above-mentioned, and the value per stone to Eire growers.

The amount of retted scutched flax produced from the 1942 crop was approximately 2,350 tons. No bonus in respect of the crop was paid by the British Government to the Government of this country and the third part of the question does not, therefore, arise. It is understood that an increase of 1/6 per stone in the original prices offered by the British Ministry of Supply was paid in full to growers, including those growers who had marketed flax before the increase was announced last February.
