Vol. 91 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Carraroe Weaving Industry.

asked the Minister for Lands if he can state the reasons for the decline of the weaving industry established at Carraroe some years ago; whether he considers the present a suitable time for its revival in view of the favourable market; and, if so, if he will take measures to have it revived.

The weaving industry established at Carraroe never got beyond the instructional stage, and was discontinued some years ago because the attendance of weavers at the classes and the standard and volume of the work done did not justify its continuance. In view of the great difficulty being experienced by the Department in maintaining existing centres of their weaving industry, it is clear that it would not be feasible to re-establish a weaving centre at Carraroe at the present time.

Are the materials for carrying on the instruction at Carraroe still available?

I do not know.
