Vol. 91 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fergus Drainage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (1) when it is proposed to commence work on the reconstruction scheme on the Fergus drainage district; (2) what wages it is proposed to pay to labourers who will be employed on the scheme; (3) how many labourers it is estimated will be employed on the scheme at its peak point, and (4) if the farmers whose lands it is proposed to acquire in carrying out the scheme have yet been paid compensation in respect of such lands; or, if not, when it is proposed to make such payments.

Drainage operations under the District of Fergus Drainage Act, 1943, were begun on 10th June, 1943. The wage being paid to labourers on these drainage operations is at the rate of 36/- per week. It is estimated that about 100 labourers will be employed at the peak point of the works.

Under the District of Fergus Drainage Act, 1943, the County Council of Clare is responsible for the acquisition of the lands to which the Deputy refers. The Commissioners of Public Works are not aware whether that council has yet completed the acquisition of these lands, but it is understood that the matter is in progress.
