Vol. 92 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government of India.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is aware that a National Provisional Government for India has been established at Rangoon, Burma, and acts as Government of the Andaman and the Nicobar Islands; and whether he will give recognition to this authority.

I am aware of the existence of the body to which the Deputy's question refers. In conformity with the customary practice of neutral states, recognition has not been given during the course of hostilities to any new State or régime which owes its existence to the changing fortunes of the war.

Could the Taoiseach indicate why he will not recognise this Government in view of our efforts for recognition when the Provisional Government was established in this country?

I have indicated very clearly the basis of our action and if the Deputy will read the reply he will see it.
