Vol. 92 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Tillage Order.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in view of the Taoiseach's declaration at Ennis on Saturday, 15th January, to the effect that the acreage under wheat and potatoes had fallen, and that we were not producing enough for our own needs, he will now state what is being done to ensure that the growing of the extra amount required will be undertaken by those farmers who, as stated by the Taoiseach at Ennis, were not doing their duty.

All farmers have been notified of their obligations under the Tillage Order by announcements in the Press and over the radio, as well as by meetings in various parts of the country addressed by Ministers and others. Special attention has been directed to the vital necessity for increasing the areas under wheat and potatoes. Provision for the cultivation of a minimum area of wheat on each holding is included in the Tillage Order for 1944. The inspectorial staff has been increased with a view to ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Order and entry on holdings is being effected in a number of cases where compliance cannot otherwise be secured.

Mr. Byrne

Can the Minister say whether any more definite action other than appeals to those who are not answering will be taken to see that supplies are kept up?

Yes, compulsory measures have been increased this year.
