Vol. 92 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Jury System.

asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention has been directed to the large number of criminal cases which have come before juries in County Meath, and the small number of convictions therefrom; whether he has had under consideration any defects in the present jury system, particularly in relation to suborning of jurors; and, if so, if it is his intention to introduce legislation making better provision for the operation of the jury system.

Mr. Boland

I am aware that the proportion of acquittals in criminal cases which have been tried by juries in the County Meath during the past few years has been much higher than the average for the whole of the country. I do not intend to introduce any legislation to amend the law relating to trial by jury.
