Vol. 92 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Land.

asked the Minister for Lands if his attention has been called by county councils and other representative bodies to the urgent necessity of again renewing the policy of acquiring land in view of the wholesale speculation on land by financiers; and if he will pay particular attention to the acquisition of land in congested districts where the land so acquired could be divided amongst uneconomic holders who are not seeking residence or outhouses.

The present curtailment of the acquisition of untenanted land for division by the Land Commission is not dictated by policy, but by the hard necessity of emergency circumstances. The matter cannot be regarded merely by itself, but must be related to other relevant factors, particularly the provision of adequate trained staff. The Land Commission are fully alive to the importance of the relief of congestion and are endeavouring to secure relief by migration as far as conditions permit.
