Vol. 92 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Supplies of Wood Fuel.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that there is still a considerable shortage of wood fuel supplies in Dublin for dealers who retail in small quantities; and if he will indicate the steps he proposes to take to meet the position.

I am aware that difficulties are being experienced in securing wood fuel in sufficient quantities to meet the abnormal demand associated with the present fuel position. This may be due to a scarcity of suitable timber adjacent to the city and to transport difficulties. It is probable that the number of railway wagons and canal barges available for the transportation of wood fuel will increase in the present season, due to the passing of the peak demands on transport facilities for grain, beet and turf traffics. I can, however, hold out little prospect of increased allocations of petrol for the transportation of wood fuel by road. Adequate stocks of good quality turf are, however, available to meet reasonable requirements.
