Vol. 93 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reduction of Fines.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state for each of the years 1940, 1941, 1942 and 1943 the number of cases in which he reduced, on petition, the fine imposed by the courts for breach of the Emergency Powers Orders in which Department of Supplies was concerned; the number of such cases in which the defendant was to pay only 25 per cent., 50 per cent. or 75 per cent. respectively of the fines so imposed, and the number of such cases in which he completely remitted the fine.

Mr. Boland

The number of such remissions in the entire period of four years would be approximately 140, and in the average case in which a remission was granted the amount remitted would be in the neighbourhood of 70 per cent. of the fine originally imposed. I trust that these approximate figures will be sufficient for the Deputy's purpose. The preparation of a special return on the exact lines of his question would involve a disproportionate amount of official time.
