Vol. 94 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway County Council Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that 14 county council road workers residing within the Borough of Galway are being paid considerably less wages than are paid to the employees of the borough council engaged at the same kind of work in the same area; and, if so, if he will take steps to end this inequitable treatment of the county council men concerned.

The maintenance of the roads in Galway Borough was by arrangement with the urban authority transferred to the Galway County Council. The present arrangement has been in force for several years, and no action is called for on my part. As the Deputy is aware, wage increases are now possible only by means of emergency bonuses. The workmen employed by the county council on the urban roads have been granted the maximum emergency bonus applicable to similar areas.
