Vol. 94 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Psychiatrists.

asked the Minister for Justice whether consideration has been given to the many public recommendations made by persons having expert knowledge of the treatment of juvenile delinquency that trained medical psychiatrists be attached to the Children's Court to advise and assist the magistrate; and, if so, whether it is proposed to give effect to such recommendations.

Arrangements are in force in the Dublin Metropolitan Area for the medical examination of juvenile delinquents in cases when the justice of the District Court considers such an examination necessary to enable him to decide what treatment he should order for the delinquents. The examinations are performed by members of the panel of doctors appointed by the President of the High Court as medical visitors to persons suffering from mental derangements who are under the care of the court.

I am not satisfied that there is any need to alter these arrangements. If experience shows that any change is necessary, however, I shall reconsider the matter.

Is the Minister aware that a very strong recommendation was made only lately not for the supply of medically trained persons, but for the supply of a medically trained psychiatrist to consider and advise on cases when required?

Mr. Boland

I am satisfied that the present arrangements are adequate, but, as I said in my reply, if they are proved to be inadequate, I am prepared to reconsider the matter. I am, however, satisfied with the present arrangements and that the people on whom we call are quite competent to deal with any cases that arise.
