Vol. 95 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Miners' Income Tax.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the grave discontent prevailing amongst mine workers in the Leinster coalfield because of the income-tax which is now being deducted from their gross earnings; whether he will undertake to have a special investigation made by the Revenue Commissioners with a view to fixing a lump sum allowance for all such workers to cover their expenses for candles, gelignite, detonators, blades, sockets, shafts, shovels, hammers and wedges, soap, insurance, medical and nursing services, and working apparel, and any other expenses incurred by them in their work.

Certain representations have been made to the Revenue Commissioners on behalf of the men concerned through the local branch of a trade union, and I understand that an investigation is being made into the question of the appropriate amount to be allowed for the expenses referred to by the Deputy.
