Vol. 95 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Price for Turf.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that there is serious dissatisfaction in many areas, especially in North Kerry, owing to the present uneconomic price available for turf, and whether, in order to prevent profiteering, he will consider the equity of fixing the price per ton for turf delivered on the roadside and for turf delivered at railway stations and shipping centres.

Apart from the provisions of Emergency Powers (Prices and Wages) (Standstill) Order, 1944, there are no legal restrictions on the price at which turf may be sold within the scheduled turf areas, in which North Kerry is included, and I am not prepared to impose such restrictions. Price levels within these areas are liable to fluctuate in accordance with conditions of supply and demand. I am not aware of any general dissatisfaction with prices, nor am I aware that the prices paid are insufficient to give producers an economic return.
