Vol. 96 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance of Motor Vehicles.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that insurance companies are imposing severe restrictions and regulations and high charges in the matter of lorry and private car insurances; and, if so, if he will investigate the matter in order to prevent unnecessary conditions being imposed on the public who own lorries and private cars.

I am not aware of the circumstances alleged to exist in the first part of the Deputy's question and the second part does not, therefore, arise.

Is the Minister not aware that there is here a ring of insurance companies and once an insurance company imposes conditions, no matter what hardship is involved, none of the other companies will do better than that? They get in touch with one another and can impose any conditions they like.

I have not received any complaints from lorry owners or private car owners generally that the rates of premium are excessive or that the companies are imposing objectionable regulations or restrictions on the car owners.

If the Minister is furnished with information showing where excessive premiums are asked, will he investigate it?

Certainly.
