Vol. 96 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electric and Steam Trains—Running Costs.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what are the all-in running costs per mile of a Drumm train on the Dublin-Bray route; and also the corresponding costs of a locomotive (steam) train of a similar passenger capacity on the same route in a normal year.

I am informed that the operating cost per mile of a locomotive (steam) train on a suburban route is .036 pence per passenger seat and the corresponding figure for a Drumm train is 120 pence. In these calculations, running costs and vehicle maintenance are taken into account, but not depreciation, interest, track or station maintenance.
