Vol. 100 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killarney Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether the Killarney Urban District Council has yet furnished a report on a proposed water scheme for Killarney, as requested by his Department in March, 1942; if so, if he will state when the report was furnished and if it is his intention to insist on having a 24-hour water supply available in Killarney.

On the 19th March, 1942, the Killarney Urban District Council were requested to obtain from their consulting engineer detailed estimates of the cost of the alternative schemes propounded for the improvement of the water supply. These estimates have not been furnished. I understand the consulting engineer joined the Army and the council have recently appointed another consultant to deal with the matter.

Did the Minister ask on more than one occasion for the information?

I am not in a position to answer that. If the Deputy repeats the question next week, I may be able to answer it.

Does the Minister not consider that, after three and a half years, the information should be supplied?

As I explained, the consulting engineer appointed in connection with this scheme joined the Army and the Department would, naturally, be reluctant to enforce upon the council the appointment of another consultant in these circumstances.

Is the Minister aware that the people of Killarney are forced to exist occasionally on four hours supply of water in the 24 hours?

I am not so aware but I shall investigate the matter.

I wrote to the Department in connection with it and I ask the Minister to look the letter up.

I shall be glad to do so.
