Vol. 100 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Women Teachers' Pensions.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the amount paid annually in pensions to the 645 women teachers who were compelled to retire between 1st October, 1938, and the 28th February, 1946; and the amount that would have been paid annually to these teachers if they had received maximum pensions on retiral.

(1) The aggregate amount of the pensions awarded to the 645 teachers in question is £84,159 per annum.

(2) If all the teachers referred to in the first part of this reply had completed 40 years' service on retirement, the total of their pensions would have been £91,273 9s.

It is necessary to state, however, that even when the requirements of the Department allowed efficient women teachers to continue to serve up to 65 years of age, there were always numbers of teachers who retired voluntarily with less than 40 years' service, and who, therefore, did not receive the maximum pension of 40/80ths of salary.
