Vol. 101 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dairy Science Faculty in Cork University.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total cost of maintaining the Dairy Science Faculty in University College, Cork, for the last year for which the information is available, indicating all the sources from which the money is derived and the amount derived from each source.

The information available is contained in the audited accounts of the college which are presented to the Dáil.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state for what particular objectives related to the dairying industry the Diploma Course and B.Sc. (Dairying) Course at University College, Cork, have been planned; if he will state the number of persons who have been awarded the diploma and the degree during each of the years 1940 to 1946, inclusive, also the number qualified since 1940 who were taken into employment in the dairying industry; and if he will state what is the incidence of unemployment in persons with dairying qualifications.

The object of the Diploma Coures in Dairy Science, which is a two-years' course, is to train prospective creamery managers. The object of the degree course, which is of four years' duration, is to give higher technical training to persons who aim at filling higher posts in the dairying industry. The number to whom the diploma or the degree have been awarded in the years from and including 1940, is 123.

The degree examination this year has not yet been held. I am not in a position to give precise figures in regard to employment, but I understand that practically all qualified persons have found employment in the dairying industry.
