Vol. 101 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Train Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the daily passenger train from Skibbereen to Cork leaves each morning at 7.30 a.m., and that the train from Bantry to Cork leaves at 7.15 a.m.; that these trains connect at Drimoleague Junction and proceed to Cork, which is usually reached at 10.45 a.m., so that the journey of 50 odd miles involved occupies over three hours; and whether he will direct Córas Iompair Éireann to provide an improved service on this line as regards accommodation, fares and speed of travel.

Improvement in running times on the railway lines mentioned cannot be effected until greater supplies of better class fuel become available. Any necessary improvements in accommodation will be made as soon as the supply position permits. The fares on the lines in question are at the scale which is in general operation throughout the company's railway system. As announced in the Press recently, the company intend to reduce passenger fares as from 1st July next.
