Vol. 103 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Export Trade.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will make a statement on the cattle export trade, having regard to the recent talks with members of the British Government; and if he will state if it is intended to develop a dead meat trade.

I would refer the Deputy to the full statement on this matter which I made in the Dáil on the 25th July last. As a result of the negotiations referred to in that statement, the British Ministry of Food have given an increase of 1d. per lb. in the price schedule for fat cattle and beef carcases, with effect from 1st October.

Facilities for an export trade in dressed beef are already available, but the volume of such trade depends on whether the registered exporters find the business economic.
