Vol. 103 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of District Justices.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of persons appointed to be district justices; the number of temporary justices whose appointments were made permanent subsequent to the enactment of the Courts of Justice (District Court) Act, 1946; also the names of the persons so appointed who possess a competent knowledge of Irish; further, whether any, and if so how many, of those appointed were appointed under authority of Section 14 of the Act, the previous appointments held by such persons, and the grounds on which they were transferred to the District Court bench.

Mr. Boland

The Courts of Justice (District Court) Act, 1946, provided for an increase in the number of justices of the District Court to a maximum of 40. The limit had previously been 33 but there had been provision also for the appointment of assistant justices, of whom there were three, viz., Messrs. O'Sullivan, Mangan and Molony, at the date of the passing of the Act. Since that date seven justices have been appointed. Three of these were the former assistant justices. Three others of the new justices, viz., Messrs. Fitzpatrick, O'Grady and Rochford, were persons who had been acting as temporary justices and the remaining one, viz., Mr. Flynn, had been a county registrar.

Of the seven persons so appointed, three, viz., Messrs. Mangan, Molony and Flynn, are competent to transact court business in Irish.
