Vol. 103 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beet Growers' Compensation.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether, arising out of the strike at the sugar beet factories, it is proposed to compensate beet growers for losses and deterioration in their crops; and if he will advise farmers and growers of the terms of the compensation to be offered.

I understand that this question has been raised with Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann by the Beet Growers' Association on behalf of the growers.

I have asked the Minister what compensation is to be given to the farmers who grew the beet in the event of a continuance of the strike? The Minister has not answered that question. Is it proposed to grant any compensation?

That matter is under discussion with Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann.

Is the Minister aware that a large portion of the beet crop has been "crowned" and is at present lying at the railway stations or on the platforms and that the beet has commenced to sprout again? The result will be that farmers will be at a considerable loss.

I am only too well aware of the facts the Deputy puts in his supplementary question.

In view of the unsatisfactory reply I have obtained and in anticipation of Question No. 4 being ruled out, I beg to give notice that I shall raise the matter on the Adjournment.

The Minister for Agriculture has no responsibility in this matter. It is a question of contract between the beet growers and Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann.
