Vol. 103 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Holdings.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the number and area of agricultural holdings acquired (a) compulsorily, and (b) by agreement, by the Land Commission since 1932.

In the period from 1st April, 1932, to 31st March, 1946, the Land Commission acquired 347,326 acres from 1,290 owners by obligatory proceedings under Section 24, Land Act, 1923. In the same period they purchased 103,511 acres from 475 voluntary vendors pursuant to Sections 35 and 36, Land Act, 1923. During that period also, the Land Commission resumed 50,146 acres from 426 tenants pursuant to Section 29, Land Act, 1923.

The figures quoted include turbary, plantations and some waste land, but statistics segregating the areas into such categories are not available and would take considerable time to compile.
