Vol. 106 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Financial Assistance for Blacksmiths.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the scarcity and also the unsuitability of the coal available to blacksmiths, particularly men engaged in the repair of implements and machinery, he will make financial provision, by way of loan or grant, to enable such tradesmen to install welding equipment.

It is not proposed to promote legislation for the purpose of providing grants or loans for the purpose indicated by the Deputy.

Is the Minister aware that the supply position as regards machinery parts and replacements is becoming very serious due to the fact that manufacturers cannot guarantee supplies until 1950? Is he further aware that welding plants in garages are fully occupied in repair work on cars and in view of the serious tillage position, will he see that priority is given by garage owners to the repair of machinery, which cannot under present circumstances be dealt with by blacksmiths?

I cannot ensure that manufacturers of machinery elsewhere will give priority to parts required for this country.
