Vol. 106 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rail Transport of Goods and Live Stock.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that rail services for goods and live stock, to a large number of main line stations, have been cancelled by Córas Iompair Éireann; if he will state what the policy of the company is regarding the future of those services; and also, what steps he proposes to take to ensure that an adequate and regular transport service will be provided for these centres at a reasonable charge.

I am aware that Córas Iompair Éireann have recently closed a number of main line stations for goods and live stock. I am advised that it is the company's policy to close small stations which are situated within a short distance of cities and to develop alternative fast road services. I am satisfied that the company's policy is designed to provide better services for the areas concerned.
