Vol. 108 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford-Dublin Train Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the reasons why the evening trains from Wexford to Dublin and from Dublin to Wexford were discontinued as from 8th November, 1947.

I am informed by the company that they have discontinued evening passenger trains on a number of lines, including the Dublin-Wexford line, for the winter months, because they need to conserve their stocks of coal for the carriage of beet, grain, fuel and other essential goods.

There is an evening omnibus service in each direction between Dublin and Wexford.

Would it be possible to change the time of departure of the train that goes down at midday to six o'clock? There is a boat three days a week in Rosslare. People have to leave Dublin in the morning——

That is a matter on which representations should be made to the company.

Would the Minister make the representations?

Hear, hear.

The representations should be made by the local interests and they would be much more likely to be effective.

The existing position is most unsatisfactory for country people. They have to stay in Dublin all night. I have had experience of it myself. I have often had to stand in the bus queue and I can say that there is no bus service worth talking about.
