In my opinion, it is in the national interest that a general election should take place as early as practicable in the new year, and it is my intention to advise the President in accordance with that view.

In view of the fact that the weather may prevent a large number of our people from voting if the election is held early in the year, in view of the fact that in other elections certain numbers of our people did not have an opportunity to record their vote because of lack of travelling facilities and through working away from their home towns, and in view of the fact that next year will be a leap year and we will have an extra day, will the Taoiseach consider declaring the polling day a public holiday?
I do not think so. I think we considered that on a previous occasion. Anyhow, it would require further consideration.
