Vol. 110 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Railway Works Employees.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that considerable perturbation exists among the boiler-makers and kindred trades at Córas Iompair Éireann works, Inchicore, because of the current report that the company has placed orders for 100 Diesel boilers for Diesel rail-car operation, which would mean considerable redundancy among those grades; and, if so, whether he will indicate what is the company's intention in regard to the utilisation of Diesel rail-cars.

I am informed by Córas Iompair Éireann that they have placed orders for a number of boilers for steam engines. The capacity of their workshops is insufficient to turn out the number of boilers which is required. The company assure me that the importation of these boilers will not involve any disemployment for existing boiler-makers, who will be fully employed on overhaul work.

I am unable at this stage to make any statement in regard to the utilisation of Diesel traction. The company have submitted, at my request, their proposals regarding the transport service which they provide, in the light of their financial results for the year 1947. These proposals are under examination.
