Vol. 112 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Creamery Service.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the nearest creamery to the Dunquin district, Dingle, County Kerry, is situated at Ballyferriter, a distance of six miles from some of the farms; and, if so, whether he will direct the Dairy Disposal Company either to provide a travelling creamery for that area, or make arrangements for the collection of milk by lorry.

I understand that some of the farmers in the Dunquin district have to travel a distance of up to six miles to deliver their milk either to Ballyferriter or to Ventry cream-separating stations. I am informed by the Dairy Disposal Company that the quantity of milk in the Dunquin area would not be sufficient to justify the expenditure involved in the provision of a travelling creamery. I am further informed that some years ago the company intimated its willingness to undertake the cartage of milk from the district for separation at Ballyferriter and Ventry cream-separating stations, but that the farmers were unwilling to co-operate. I propose, however, to ask the company to re-examine the feasibility of collecting milk in this area.
